Data & Systems Alignment

We believe that when given the right resources and support, people will thrive.

We see the role of the criminal justice system as assisting with those resources and supports when individuals are struggling, providing the services and accountability to guide them toward a thriving and prosocial lifestyle.

We help criminal justice organizations do this better by being trauma responsive, data driven, and with a close eye on equitable outcomes.

Over 99% of all people who have contact with the criminal justice system will be back in the community eventually.

If their court contact made their situation worse rather than better,

who are we really helping?

And how much are we really helping?

By understanding trauma, criminogenic risk, and evidence based programming, courts can greatly increase their impact.

Trauma Responsivity
Individual and systemic trauma can result in the brain's emergency response system getting "stuck" in high alert. Until a feeling of safety can be established, it's difficult to address criminogenic risk.

Data Driven Decision Making

Understanding clients' responsivity factors, criminogenic risks and needs, and protective factors allows for treatment planning to be most effective and best matched to each individual client.

Resource Allocation
Understanding the risks and needs of clients allows organizations to better plan for staffing and program resources. Aggregate understanding of risks and needs can also allow for proactive community conversations about mitigating risk.

No judgement.

we'll meet you where you are.

Nonprofit doesn't Mean Non-Impact.

Data is a powerful tool to help nonprofits deliver services at their highest potential. We believe that having the data nonprofits need to thrive shouldn't be so burdensome that it takes away from doing the actual work.

Risk Assessment Implementation

Petersen Research Consultants is able to provide trainings on understanding criminogenic risk and utilizing the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory 2.0 (YLS, a proprietary tool available through MHS). Risk assessment implementation trainings may be jurisdiction-specific or may be more generalized for staff from across jurisdictions. Training topics include: what criminogenic risks and needs, responsivity, and protective factors are, how decisions have historically been made in the justice system compared to what evidence-based practice tells us, and how to use risk assessment to improve decision making and treatment. Participants will gain an understanding of what the YLS is, how to conduct an assessment, and how to utilize the instrument for case planning. This training is most appropriate for probation officers and other juvenile court staff.

Please contact us if you'd like to discuss risk assessment training more!
